Beginner Knitting Instructions
Most of us look at a ball of yarn and see…a sweater. Not Eugene Souleiman. He unravels the skeins and lets them lead him to explosive shapes, textures, colors and silhouettes. And then he executes, knitting the strands of his ethereal concepts until they become fantastic, three-dimensional realities. With vision and courage, he transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary and our “tribe” is much, much richer thanks to his astonishing gifts!
An innovative spirit has characterized Souleiman’s work, which has featured intricate braiding and sculpted wigs and made use of such innovative tools as a butter knife (around which hair was clamped to produce a crimped effect). “Once you’ve learned the rules, you can break the rules,” he has said. “And once you’ve broken the rules, you can make the rules.”
Souleiman’s ever-forward approach has led to appointments as editorial director for Vidal Sassoon, co–creative director for Bumble and Bumble, and creative director for Tecni.Art, L’Oréal Professionnel’s salon line. On occasion, he does make forays outside of the fashion world, making chess-set wigs for the artists Jake and Dinos Chapman, and styling Lady Gaga’s various bobs for the “Alejandro” music video.
